Wide Garter Stripe Shawl
Originally designed to be a teaching project, this shawl offers a couple of challenging opportunities for newer knitters: Following a pattern, provisional cast-on, yo increases, slipped stitches, managing a selvedge edge.
Equally suited for more advanced knitters looking for something to work on while reading or binge-watching their latest obsession.
The large needles and medium weight yarn work up quickly, with great drape! Since there is no open work, there is no need to aggressively block this shawl. You don’t need to wait to get yarn delivered, this project is the perfect opportunity to stash dive! Literally ANY fiber is suitable. Acrylic, wool, cotton, alpaca, linen, blends; single, plied, or tape. Solid, random stripe, variegated, color-blocked, or self striping, any yarn combination will work with this shawl. Add fringe, tassels, or embroidery to elevate your finished project. The possibilities are endless.
Gauge:
Moderately unimportant. However to get a finished project with approximate dimensions of 68 x 31, gauge of 3.5 sts/in is suggested.
Yarn:
500-600 yards of worsted/aran/medium/size 4 yarn. Larger shawls will require additional yardage.
Materials:
For provisional cast-on: 1 yard contrasting waste yarn, I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook.
4 stitch markers, yarn needle for weaving in ends.
