Wide Old Owl
Make a very flat owl face for use as an applique or coaster. You’ll stitch the eyes first and separately from each other, and then the rest of the face around the eyes. The beak is a long stitch made into faraway loops in the style of overlay crochet; the rest of the shaping is done via various height stitches.
The total amount of yarn is about a quarter ounce (7 g), mostly in the main face color with a small amount in 2-3 other colors, depending on which style eye you use. Photos show each round along the way and clarification points.
It is assumed you know standard crochet stitches up to triple crochet in height (US terms) plus double crochet decrease, how to do color change (though there are reminders in the pattern of when to use the next color), and how to join new yarn with a slip stitch. The pattern also uses linked triple crochet, triple treble crochet, and the needle join (false/sewn slip stitch), which are all taught in the pattern.
