Wiglaf
I love a simple pattern – something I can knit while paying attention to a movie or a conversation with my friends. But I also want a pattern that is engaging to work on and gives me a beautiful finished product. I think this scarf combines these elements pretty well. The most complicated part is counting the rows.
It is a very flexible pattern. You can use most yarns and you can easily modify the width to fit your preference simply by casting on more stitches (the scarf pictured measures 63.5” x 6.5”).
A note on the name: Wiglaf is my favorite character from the Old English poem Beowulf. The protagonist, Beowulf, when faced with a dragon who is terrorizing his people, is abandoned by all his chosen companions. Except Wiglaf. In Beowulf’s darkest hour, one man stands loyal by his side and will not abandon his king.
To make the scarf, you will need two contrasting solid or semi-solid colorways of a sock-weight yarn (Color A: about 310 yards, Color B: about 220 yards). The sample was knit using Purple Lamb’s So Silky Sock yarn with Winedark Sea for Color A and Mithril for Color B. You will also need size 7 knitting needles or whatever size works with the yarn you are using.
I hope you enjoy it!
