Wild Calypso
Wild Calypso is a somewhat more than half circle shawl knitted from the bottom up. It varies the position of the decrease motifs to make a smooth half circle.
Bead drops can be added for extra sparkle and a lovely drape.
Size: Size is dependent on your choice of yarn, needles, and the number of Motifs cast on. Two samples are shown:
Sample 1, green, started with 44 Motifs, has a depth of 32” (81 cm). Sample 2, blue, started with 20 Motifs, has a depth of 25″ (63.5 cm).
Yarn: Yarn fiber and weight are your choice.
Sample 1 was knit with 2 skeins of Schmutzerella Excellent in Quidditch Green, a lace weight yarn. I used about 1100 yds (1000 m).
Sample 2 was knit with 2 Mountain Colors sock blanks in the color Blues, a fingering weight yarn, 700 yds (640 m).
A chart for yardage is provided with the gauge swatch.
Gauge: Gauge is your choice, however both samples are worked with a very loose gauge.
In Sample 1 one pattern repeat is 3 ¼” (8.3 cm) wide by 2” (5 cm) long.
In Sample 2 one pattern repeat is 3 ½” (8.9 cm) wide and 2½” (6 cm) long.
Needles: Use the needles that get the gauge you want in the yarn you want. You will need 2 circular needles, at least 48″ (122 cm) long: your main needle and one 2 sizes larger to cast on with.
Sample 1 used a US 10 (6.00 mm) needle to cast on and a US 8 (5.00 mm) for the body of the work.
Sample 2 used a US 11 (8.00 mm) to cast on and a US 9 (5.5 mm) for the body of the work.
Notions: You will also need up to 65 markers, a darning needle, tape measure and scissors.
Optionally for the bead drops you will need polyester sewing thread to match the color of your cast on row, a beading needle, the beads that you choose for your drops, 2 more sets than repeats you have cast on, and an electric beading thread cutter.
Difficulty: Intermediate. Stitches used are basic decreases and increases, slipped stitches and kitchener stitch. Optionally you may want basic bead embroidery stitches: chain stitch, basic knots, and bead stringing.
