Seed stitch can sometimes be irritating to work over large areas and seems devised to be vexing at best if the entire garment is worked in the pattern. Challenged to come up with a design using seed stitch, after some thinking, I remembered the photos of old-time fishing ganseys. These designs combined seed stitch with large spaces of stockinette, placed cables, and even garter stitch, creating a variety of vertical and horizontal elements.

For this design, I chose some classically-inspired seed stitch patterns, beginning with Beaded Rib worked on the front and back tails, sleeve cuffs, and neckband. Vertical columns of single seed stitches run up the body and sleeves to the beginning of the patterning just below the armholes. A horizontal band of an OXO-style seed stitch pattern divides the upper and lower body and sleeves. The elongated open cables on each side of the front and back insert a little additional knitting and visual interest.
