Wild Poppies is a beautiful shawl with a lace spine and border inspired by poppy petals; which you can bead as much or a little as you like.

I loved the original border pattern for the Rockrose Wrap so much I wanted to incorporate it into a heart shaped shawl, not just by adapting it into an expanding border pattern, but using it to add interest to the increases at spine of the shawl as well, creating a softer, more flattering shape than a traditional triangular shawl.

Adding beads to the edge of this cosy but lightweight shawl (as shown in the red version) gives it just the right amount of drape to sit nicely on your shoulders, but adding beads all over (as shown in the purple variegated version) gives a really stunning effect.

The petal pattern reminds me of the shape of poppy petals, hence the name!

All lace patterns have both charts and written instructions so you can work from whichever you prefer. Charts are provided on a separate page at the end of the pattern, so there’s no wasted paper if you don’t want to use them.

This shawl is designed to be knitted in either heavy lace (lace weight yarn with around 600m/100g skein) or 4ply weight yarn (with around 400m/100g skein). Requirements for each version are listed below. Guidance is also provided in the pattern on making a larger or smaller shawl.

Heavy lace version (red shawl):
Wingspan: 134cm (53”)
Depth of shawl: 53.5cm (21”)
Depth of lace border: 11cm (4.5”) to tip of flowers at cast off

4ply version (purple variegated shawl):
Wingspan: 102cm (40”)
Depth of shawl: 47cm (18.5”)
Depth of lace border: 14cm (5.5”) to tip of flowers at cast off

Heavy lace version (red shawl with beaded edge):
Posh Yarn Valerie Heavy Lace (70% Merino wool, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere, 600m/100g), shade ‘Steek? Eeek!’ 1 skein

4 ply version (purple variegated shawl with all over beading):
Posh Yarn Lorelei Sock (70% Silk, 30% Seacell, 400m/100g), shade ‘Hurry Up And Wait’ 1 skein
Yarn note: Posh Yarn is dyed in one-off, non-repeatable colourways.

Tension (take care to match your tension, otherwise you may need more yarn):
Heavy lace version:
22 sts and 35 rows to 10cm (4”) in stocking stitch
1 patt rep (13 sts and 12 rows) of Petal pattern 2 measures 5cm (2“) wide x 4cm (1.5”) tall (both using 3.5mm needles and measured after blocking)

4ply version:
19 sts and 30 rows to 10cm (4”) in stocking stitch
1 patt repeat of Petal pattern 2 measures 6cm (2.5“) wide x 4.5cm (1.75“) tall (both using 3.75mm needles and measured after blocking)

Needles:
Heavy lace version:
3.5mm circular at least 80cm long

4ply version:
3.75mm circular at least 80cm long
(Shawl is knitted flat, but a circular needle is necessary in order to accommodate the large number of sts)

Notions:
5 stitch markers (optional)
Tapestry needle
1.0mm crochet hook for adding beads

Heavy lace version (with beaded edge):
Approx. 200 beads (size 6/0 or larger, sample uses size 5/0 Miyuki triangles in Clear/Gold Internal Colour Lined)

4ply version (with all over beading):
Approx. 700 beads (size 6/0 or larger, sample uses size 5/0 Miyuki triangles in Light Amethyst Transparent Rainbow)
