I came upon this interesting stitch while looking for ways to minimize the pooling effect often seen when using variegated yarns. The use of increases and decreases disguises the striping and pooling. The increase and it’s corresponding decrease are made in the same stitch elongating the stitches to create the flower shape. This stitch can also be worked in stripes by alternating two rows of one color with two rows of another color.

The vest is worked in pieces and seamed. The front is worked by making the two open pieces and joining them together with the garter stitch top. The shoulders are joined and the piece is finished with a crochet edging. Stitches may be picked up and two rows of garter stitch worked in place of crochet edging. Decorative buttons are attached to the front top.

Any dk #3 cotton variegated yarn can be substituted for the pattern yarn.
