Every year, West Sound Wildlife Shelter’s Ward A becomes a hubbub of chirping and twittering. This is the baby bird nursery, the place where tiny robins, jays, towhees, and thrushes struggle to survive their first few fragile weeks of life. They come to us orphaned, injured, or improperly separated from their parents by well-meaning people trying to rescue birds who are simply learning to fledge. The birds in the nursery are infants, not yet ready to fly.

We provide knitted “nests” for these wee birds, our closest approximation to what they would have had in the wild. Circular, knit nests are warm, flexible, and shaped correctly to hold in the babies.

Can you help knit nests for these tiny birds? West Sound Wildlife is now collecting nests from knitters, and we need your help! These nests can be made from ends of yarn, and they’re a quick project for experienced knitters. Shelter volunteers line the nests so little feet don’t get caught. It’s important that you follow the directions exactly so the nests have a flat and sturdy base. Thank you so much for your help!
