Willie's Baby Blanket
This blanket is very special to me, because it’s the pattern I was knitting during the last month I had my Golden Retriever. He had been sick for a while and suddenly started to decline rapidly. We knew the time was short, and I wanted to sit with him as much as possible. He was accustomed to me knitting so it was normal, and it was comforting. I needed something easy so garter stitch was the obvious choice.
It took me a long time to actually get this blanket published after he crossed to the rainbow bridge. The actual project I made sat in a bin of other finished projects stored away in a closet along with my broken heart. But now that it’s been two years since Willie left my side in this life, I think it’s time to share this pattern with everyone.
I reknitted the blanket with yarn from LoveKnitting. It has just enough wool to be snuggly and have beautiful stitch definition. Any super bulky weight yarn will work, of course. When you knit this blanket for someone you love, I hope you will also be reminded of my precious golden retriever who was loved by many.
…………..
This blanket is a great size for a baby’s crib, but it’s also a wonderful lap blanket. I had many readers request a blanket for wheelchairs and for people in nursing homes. I think this one is perfect for both.
You can leave the tassels off if there is a concern it might impede someone’s mobility. Or you could add pom poms or just go with plain. It’s totally up to you!
