First came the gradient shawl. I watched the colors unspool across the fabric as I worked the pattern. Halfway through, I wondered how the stitch pattern would look if I used two different colors, and immediately jumped into the second version. Choose a favorite? I can’t!

Designed for a gradient yarn or two contrasting colors, the Willings Alley Shawl is an asymmetrical shawl worked from the point to the base.

Alternating bands of garter stitch and a knitted chevron create the fabric. The pattern is easy to memorize, making this a go-to project for travel knitting or knit night.

The finished shawl has a generous wingspan of 65” after blocking with a back length of 26” after blocking.

You will need:

  • 760 yards of either a gradient or 380 yards each of two colors.
  • a US size 5 32” circular needle.
  • a yarn needle.
