I created this pattern using a combinations of stitches. For the tree section on the back of the shawl I wanted to create an image of an old tree with large roots and a canopy of branches. I designed this tree using a number of cable stitches which can seem overwhelming when looking at the chart or the written instructions but once started they all seem to make sense. For the leaves I choose an Estonian lace patten of willow leaves. The shawl is worked in three parts. The first part is the tree chart. This is to be completed first and with this shawl I used a different color for the tree but the same color can be used for the whole shawl if so desired. If you choose to use two different colors you will need about 100 yards of a lace weight yarn for the tree and about 1000 yards for the wings of the shawl. The second and third section are the sides of the tree which is the leaf pattern. The pattern is both charted and written so you have both references.
Materials needed for this pattern include: 1.5 US of 2.5mm 32 inch circular needles, cable needles, stitch markers, tapestry needle and blocking pins and or wires.
For the yarn I have listed three types that can be used for this pattern but any fine lace weight yarn would work.
