Wilma's Stole
This stole was designed for dearest friend Wilma Malcolmson. It is meant to be that soft and squishy comfy to snuggle up in and relax with after a long day’s work. It is also a playful homage the beautiful simplicity yet elegance of the garter stitch using oversized needles, which gives a faux lace kind of look. It is knitted in the horizontal, to make for long wavy stripes that wrap snugly around your neck. The tassels lend flair to the stole, and also means that no ends need weaving in. For this stole blocking is optional: with no blocking the stole will retain its spongy, snuggly feel.
This pattern is suitable for beginner knitters.
The pattern is for jumperweight yarn. You can choose a different weight yarn, but that will affect the dimensions of the stole. Note that with a different weight yarn you will also have to adjust the size of the needles.
Yarn
100g Moorit
50g Aess
50g Beremeal
50g Aetmeal
Needles
Circular needles, 6mm (oversized) or larger. To make this scarf you will need circulars because you are knitting the length of the scarf, not the width; straight needles will not work. If you choose a different yarn weight you need to alter your needle size accordingly.
Other materials
Scissors
Tension
15 sts x 14 rows = 10 cm before blocking. Tension is not hugely critical for this stole.
Size before blocking
Length: ca 194cm (excluding tassels)
Width: ca 32cm
Size can be adjusted by using larger or smaller needles, or by adding/subtracting the number of stitches and/or the number of stripe sequences. Notice that if you make your stole larger or wider, you will need more yarn. Alternatively you can alter the size by using a different weight yarn, such as Double Knit, but then you will also have to adjust your needle size.
Techniques
knitting in the flat, knit stitch, slip stitch, tassel knotting.
