The Winchester Waves design produces a fabric with protruding and intentional waves that create depth and should not be blocked out. It flows beautifully and is effortless to modify. If you have the knit stitch down, you can bring this pattern to life!

The inspiration for this design was the stained glass windows found in the Winchester Mystery House located in San Jose, California. Sarah Winchester, the heiress of the Winchester fortune is rumored to have believed in speaking with the the dead via seance and psychics. The story tells the tale of a spirit or psychic informing her that many spirits meant her ill will. Therefore, she took it upon herself to confuse them, by building a house where they would forever get lost and be unable to locate her. The 8-room farmhouse grew to 160 rooms by 1922 and never stopped construction during her lifetime. It contained 10,000 windows, many of which were stained glass. Over the years the ornately colored glass has run, creating a striking, wavy appearance that is awe-inspiring.

The colors reflect a stained glass appearance incorporating bright pinks, oranges, purple, and teals, contrasted with black.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS - Varies
This pattern is meant to be modified to your desired size. The finished measurements of the designer’s pattern fit an average adult frame and should fit most people nicely. (If you use the suggested yarn, it will grow some when soaked and air-dried.)

MATERIALS
Yarn: New Garden Yarns - Lotus Garden Fingering ( 80% Super Wash Merino/ 20% Silk 100g, 400yds) in 5 colors. I have provided for a 5% overage compared to the gauge provided.

A: Just Black - 59 yards
B: Biscayne - 255 yards
C: Heather - 147 yards
D: Ah-May-Zing - 180 yards
E: Spicey - 189 yards
Total Yards = 830 yards

Needles: US 6 (4mm) needles - The designer used 32” (81cm) circular needles (a shorter length may be used)

Stitch Markers: 11 - Keep extra markers on hand if you will be increasing the width of the pattern

Removable Stitch Marker: To mark right side of fabric
Tapestry Needle: To weave in ends

Row Counter: It will be helpful until you memorize the pattern

GAUGE
24 sts and 20 rows in garter stitch on US size 6 (4mm) over 4” (10cm) each before blocking. Gauge is not important to this project other than for yarn usage.

Notes: This pattern is intended to be extremely versatile. As you work the pattern you may stop knitting and bind off whenever you find the size you like. The stitch pattern will create gentle 3D waves in the fabric. These are intentional and should not be blocked out. Use your minis for stripes, add color panels, or use a variegated yarn for built-in color changes. You can even use yarn of a different weight. Try a mohair pop! Share what you come up with.
