Wind & Sea, I wanted to name this pattern something along the lines of “Shaped by the Wind and Sea” a long name sort of as a placeholder for a word that hasn’t been invented yet. The beach, the ripples of sand formed by ocean and waves and wind. I wanted there to be a beautiful scientific word for it but I looked and didn’t find anything that really struck a cord. “Sand waves” felt too literal. Shaped by Wind & Sea seems more poetic, which fits with the feelings I get when I’m at the beach at low tide and I get to stomp around all over the little ripples of sand. But of course I shortened it to Wind & Sea. Which is nice, and has that lovely ampersand which I am so fond of.

This shawl is constructed in that sideways bias triangle invented by Martina Behm and that was popularized by Andrea Mowry’s Find Your Fade (we need to name this shape so I don’t have to describe it every time! Sideways Biased Triangle?). This shape is so unique, and it’s a bit tricky to chart and design with. But I’m so happy with the outcome. All-over waves of lace in such a big wearable shape. And in a lovely single ply rustic yarn. It’s exactly what I wanted!

Yarn:

3 skeins of Hinterland Dusk yarn in colourway “Honey” or approximately 1100 yards (1006 metres) of fingering weight yarn (this is the yardage for 3 skeins of Hinterland Dusk)

Needles:

3.75mm (US 5) circular needles in at least a 24” (60cm) cord. Or whatever size needles it takes you to get gauge.

Notions:

Whichever tools you prefer to weave in
ends, and whichever tools you prefer to
block your shawls.

Gauge:

24 stitches and 32 rows = 4” (10cm) square, knit flat in lace pattern and blocked.

Size:

84” (213cm) measured along the wingspan.
29” (74cm) measured down the deepest part of the triangle.

K - Knit (K2 = Knit 2 stitches)
P - Purl (P2 = Purl 2 stitches)
