Wind and Sun Hat
This hat has a 3” brim with a contrast color underside. It is doubled to provide really good sun protection.
The sideband is a lily of the valley lace pattern. There is a headband pattern in all three sizes to test knit the lace sideband alone to check the fit before knitting the whole hat. Child size and small have 3 repeats of the lace pattern with one falling in the center front. Size large has 4 lace repeats with 2 on each side.
Increases at the top of the side band hold the tip of the hat out from the head. There is a joined reverse stockinette turn and a tight spiral knit tip to keep sun off the scalp.
This hat uses a 3 needle join 3 times — once for the brim, again for a drawstring enclosure, and a third time at the turn to the tip of the hat.
There is a 4 part video tutorial on YouTube. Time stamp links are included in the PDF to jump to the relevant video explanations.
An interchangeable needle set is used to make this hat as well as miscellaneous extra small needles, either DPNs or long cable needles, for the three needle joins. I did not list these extra needles as required because the size is not critical. Whatever you have will work.
I have one of these for sale on my Etsy store right now.
