This is a thick, cushiony hat because it is made with heavy yarn and a double layer created by stranded knitting. At my gauge, after blocking, the sample hat measures 22 inches in circumference and it is 8 1/2 inches from edge to crown.

You can change the size by using larger or smaller needles and/or yarn. You might have to knit a gauge swatch or two, to obtain the right number of stitches for the size you want to make.

To belabor the obvious: the pattern calls for 112 stitches. If you need a 20-inch hat, (112/20=5.6) you will need yarn and needles that give you a gauge of approximately 5.5 stitches per inch, or 22 stitches in 4 inches.

This was a pleasure to knit and worked up quickly. I didn’t want a ribbed edge, so I let the edge roll as stockinette will do, until the hat was finished. Then I felted the edge slightly with my fingers and hot, soapy water so that it now lies flat. However, in the pattern I give the option for a ribbed edge if you prefer that.

I’m quite happy to answer questions. Send me a message through Ravelry.

ScholarlyShoes added an extra row of the small diamonds at the bottom of the hat, for extra length.
