Wind Chimes
Inspired by the theme of “AIR,” stitches reminiscent of wind chimes and whirligigs are featured in this pattern. The shawl uses Faroese shaping with a center back panel and shoulder shaping, which allows for comfortable wearing as it stays put on the shoulders. It is worked from the top down with a reverse stockinette stitch background. Increases for shaping are generally worked on the wrong side rows. The stitch patterns are based on those found in various Japanese stitch dictionaries. As you work your way down the shawl, the stitch patterns become familiar and easy to read right from the knitting. The pattern contains 15 pages of detailed instructions and charts.
Materials: Samples were made using both light fingering and DK weight yarns. This could be made with lace weight for a smaller size or a fingering weight would work well, too. Choose a yarn that will have good stitch definition in either gradient, solid or tonal coloring.
Beads: 614 beads are used in the pattern. Samples were made using triangle beads in size 8/0 for light fingering and 5/0 for the DK weight. These beads catch the light very well. Size 6/0 seed beads could also be used.
Size: The size can be varied by using various weights of yarn and different needle size appropriate for the yarn. Material needs are given for light fingering and DK weight in the pattern.
The pattern has been expertly test knit and tech edited.
