Windcaller
Windcaller is a heavily cabled hat that will keep you warm all winter. It begins with a tubular cast-on (though feel free to substitute your favorite stretchy cast-on) and is worked in 1x1 rib. Once the ribbing is complete, an increase round is worked to compensate for the difference in gauge between the ribbing and cable pattern. After the hat measures approximately 2.25”/4cm less than your desired height, the crown decreases are worked.
Both written and charted instructions are included, and there is a low vision accessible version (see file descriptions at bottom of page).
Sizes
Actual hat size:
Width: 7.75 (9, 10.25) in. / 20 (23, 26) cm
Height: 7 (8.25, 8.25) in. / 18 (21, 21) cm
To fit head circumference: Child (19” / 48cm), Teen/Adult Small (21” / 53cm), Adult (23” / 58cm)
Note: The ‘to fit’ size classifications are based on averages. For the best fit, measuring the intended head is highly recommended.
The sample is shown in the Teen/Adult Small size on a 21” / 53cm circumference head.
Yarn
140 (160, 190) yards / 130 (146, 174) meters of worsted weight yarn.
Sample was made using 160 yards (146 meters) of Worsted 2 Ply by Twin Oaks Farm in colorway Blue Heather.
Choose a yarn with good stitch definition that is uniform enough and light enough to highlight complex cables.
Needles
US 4 / 3.5mm circular needles with 16” / 40cm cord
US 6 / 4mm circular needles with 16” / 40cm cord
US 6 / 4mm double-pointed needles
Or size needed to meet gauge.
Gauge
Ribbing (in the round, blocked):
22 sts and 28 rounds = 4” / 10cm on US 4 / 3.5mm needles
Cable Pattern (in the round, blocked):
One full cable repeat (12 sts and 18 rounds) = 1.75” / 4.5cm wide and 2.5” / 6cm high on US 6 / 4mm needles
Because the cable pattern does not have as much stretch as stockinette or ribbing, gauge is important for a good fit. Swatching both the ribbing and the cable pattern in the round is highly recommended.
Notions
One stitch marker
One cable needle
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
