Windchill Warning, the first pattern release in the Friluftsliv Cowl Collection, is worked top down in the round until the shoulders are bound off, and the front and back are finished flat. German Short Rows and raglan shaping create a traditional dickie shape and buttery soft Malabrigo Rasta yarn provides cozy warmth. A complementary hat pattern, Windchill Warning Beanie, is available in five sizes. For most sizes, the set can be made with three skeins of Rasta (2 tonal, 1 contrast).

Friluftsliv (pronounced free-loofts-liv) is a Scandinavian term that translates to “open air living.” Embracing the concept that there is no bad weather, only inadequate clothing choices, I designed Windchill Warning to wear indoors and outside on the coldest winter days in New England. Its weight and fit keep chills away from your neck, chest, and back when worn under a fleece or heavy cardigan. It can also be worn atop a jacket. Bundle up and enjoy the fresh air!

The 22.5” (57 cm) size can be made with one skein each of two colors of Rasta…if you make gauge and don’t mind yarn chicken! I recommend two skeins of tonal Rasta and one skein of a contrast color Rasta yarn. It should leave you with enough yarn remaining to make a matching beanie. The larger size (25.5”, 65 cm) requires two skeins of color 1 and one skein of color 2, if knitting with Malabrigo Rasta.

To help manage yardage/meterage if you aim to finish with one skein of color 1, I recommend sizing down needles where indicated in the pattern. Additional gauges are included in the pattern.

Video tutorials are provided for Thorn Stitch and for a special way to finish weaving in ends at the shoulder bind off. Photo details and tips for carrying yarn are also included.
