Winding Stairway Mitts
Winding Stairway Mitts was the pattern for the January 2018 mystery KAL in the Fingerless Glove Fanatics group. It features a textured stairway starting at the wrist and winding around the palm; beads and twisted ribbing add visual interest. The way the thumb is shaped makes for an extra comfortable fit.
Materials: In addition to the yarn and needles mentioned above, you’ll need 40 seed beads. Several options between 2.6 mm and 4 mm - between 9/0 and 6/0 - were tested and will work (depending on your yarn weight).
A solid or semi-solid colour is best for this design; the yarn should have good stitch definition to show the pattern well.
Skills required: Knitting and purling in the round, casting on and binding off, increases and decreases, working cables over four stitches, applying beads and working Vikkel braids. Cabling techniques, beading with a small crochet hook and working Vikkel braids are explained in words; a step-by-step photo tutorial for working a Vikkel braid is also included.
The pattern includes full written instructions, as well as complete charts for both hands.
Sizes: The pattern is written for one size; worked at the gauge given above, the mitt circumference (unstretched) is 17 cm/6¾’’, and the mitts are 17.5 cm/7’’ long.
The patterns includes suggestions on how to adjust gauge and adapt the stitch count for larger or smaller sizes.
Thank you to Nat12 for test knitting and to JoEmy for test knitting and tech editing.
