Windmill Tile makes me think of all the beautiful windmills one can find in the Netherlands. Among others, I crocheted a tile in shades of blue and white, a ‘Delft blue’ version.

This tile is crocheted in mosaic overlay technique, in the round. This implies that there are no numerous ends to fasten off, just two for each color used. The technique is not difficult, just pay close attention to the stitch placement in the chart.

Windmill is made in 20 rounds, starting with a magic circle. Stitches used are (all in US terms): slip stitch, chain stitch, half double crochet, single crochet in back loop only, double crochet in front loop only.

The nicest results are obtained by starting each tile with the darker of the two colors and ending with the lighter one. Different diamonds appear in the corners when you put several Windmill tiles together.

Each tile that is made with DK weight yarn (115-130 m per 50 g skein) will measure about 25 cm and weigh about 36-44 g.

Acrylic yarns, cottons or a mixed fiber all will work well.

This tile can be combined with other tiles I designed to create a big throw, blanket or bedspread. Look for those tiles in my Ravelry store.

The pattern includes three charts, one for a tile in two colors, one for a tile in four colors and one for a tile with tapestry technique, and written instructions and photos to illustrate certain stitches or techniques. It also comes with a separate tutorial with plenty of photos on how to start a mosaic tile, intended for those who are not familiar with mosaic crochet and need more information than the pattern provides.

The adventurous may want to crochet this tile in tapestry technique. The photo of the pillow is an example. The pattern contains detailed instructions to crochet such a tile.
