Window Greens
Window Greens technically precedes the 14-square scarf, but it’s definitely in the same family. It uses mitered squares and a mix of buttons to transform a pretty straightforward rectangle into something that can be fashioned into a variety of shapes, and also keep your neck warm.
Knit mostly flat; a little bit in the round. (A longer circular needle is recommended for the last part, though it can be done on a 24”/60cm one if necessary.) Yardage estimates are rough, because my samples were in handspun, or mostly handspun.
Materials:
About 350 yards of sportweight to DK yarn
1 24-48”/60-120cm circular needle in US4-5/3.5.5-3.75mm, or size needed for gauge
11 buttons, ideally sized to fit eyelets, about 1/2”/10mm-3/4“/19mm
Tapestry needle
4 removable stitch markers
If needed: additional needle and thread for sewing buttons
Gauge:
Gauge is 20 sts and 40 rows over 4”/10cm of lightly blocked garter st. Please be sure to check your gauge; this is probably one of those projects where you can get away with a gauge that’s a little bigger, but a smaller gauge will make the resulting cowl too small.
