Windrow Cardigan

This cardigan is knit in an easy ‘seeded rib’ stitch pattern that has a streamlined appearance, but cozy feel! It has modified dropped shoulders meaning there is some underarm shaping so the shoulders drop moderately, rather than way down on the arms.
Construction:
It is worked in one piece, from the top down, with neat i-cord edges and buttonholes knit at the same time so there is minimal finishing, other than stitching the pocket linings in place on the inside, and attaching buttons.
The back neck begins with an i-cord that you pick up stitches from for the upper back, and the shoulders are shaped with short rows. Stitches for the sleeves are picked up along the vertical edges of upper back and front pieces. Sleeve caps are also shaped with short rows, and then the sleeves are knit flat and seamed (since seeded rib is easier to knit flat) but they can be knit in the round if you prefer.
The pockets begin with an i-cord that you pick up stitches from as well; however, they are optional and could easily be omitted.
Techniques:
Picking up sts along cast-on and vertical edges; short rows; basic increases and decreases; whip or slip stitch (for securing the pocket linings); mattress stitch (for seaming the sleeves)
The pattern includes detailed instructions for incorporating increases, decreases, and short rows into the seeded rib pattern so you don’t need to ‘read’ the stitch pattern for these aspects.
Please post any pattern questions in my discussion group.
Fit:
The cardigan is intended to have a relaxed fit with approximately 4 - 9 inches (10 - 23 cm) of positive ease around the chest.
The sizes given above are the circumference of the finished cardigan when buttoned up, so choose a size that has the ease you prefer. (For example, if your chest measures 48 inches and you’d like about 6 inches of ease, then Size XL would be the closest.)
