A cowl that looks like a shawl. I love to wear my shawls “backwards”, but often the tails slip and need adjusting. I love a cowl, but I don’t always like the way they lay. I’ve taken the best of both and joined them together in this design. Techniques used: knit and purl, knitting in the round, K2tog, M1, S2kp, YO, Ssk. All techniques are explained in the stitch glossary and the basic lace pattern is written not charted. Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate.

This pattern is now written for worsted weight yarn and fingering weight yarn.

Substitute yarn, any worsted weight yarn, at least 200 yds., or any fingering weight yarn, at least 275 yds.

Correct gauge is not critical for this project, but your final measurements and yardage requirements may vary if your gauge is different.

Pattern notes: The cowl is started at the top, worked flat until it is joined to work in the round for the lace section. It is finished with a modified picot bind off. There is quite a bit of repetition in the pattern, but I wrote it row by row to keep track of stitch counts and make it easier to mark your progress.

Approximate finished measurements: front – 13in long, back – 5in long

I recommend blocking it flat but folded on itself as shown in the pictures.

You need US 6//4mm needle, gauge is 24 sts and 32 rows, and you need about 275yds of yarn.
