Wine in the Wool Cowl
Join us for the Color Packs & Stash Scraps Knit-along from Jan 1 - Feb 28, 2016!
Frabjous Fibers takes their inspiration for their yarn and colorway names from Alice in Wonderland. When thinking about what to name this pattern set, I found inspiration in the words of the Alice in Wonderland “Drinking Song”:
Then fill up the glasses as quick as you can,
And sprinkle the table with buttons and bran,
Put cats in the Coffee and mice in the tea
And welcome Queen Alice with thirty times three.
Put cats in the Coffee and mice in the tea
And welcome Queen Alice with thirty times three.
Then put in the glasses molasses and ink
Or anything else that is pleasant to drink,
Mix sand with the cider and wool with the wine
And welcome Queen Alice with ninety times nine,
Mix sand with the cider and wool with the wine
And welcome Queen Alice with ninety times nine.
The “Mice in the Tea” Mad Hatter mini skein pack colorway that I was working with had such rich colors, I though it was a perfect illustration of “Wine in the Wool”!
This hat comes in one size, though it is very easily adjustable by changing the CO stitch count (while keeping it a multiple of 4). Once you are familiar with the stitch pattern, it is quite easy to add extra rows once the rows in the chart are complete, if you would like to make it taller than 12”. This stitch pattern is simple enough for car or tv-knitting.
Techniques used:
• Knitting in the round
• Working with 2 colors (just alternating, no long carries)
• knitting & purling
• Reading a very simple colorwork chart
The Yarn:
Approximately 430 yds of Mad Hatter sport-weight, 100% Merino yarn from Frabjous Fibers • One mini skein pack includes 5 mini skeins • 86 yds each • 142 g
Sample Cowl made from the “Mice in the Tea” colorway
Other Materials:
• US Size 3 / 3.25mm circular needle
• 1 traveling stitch marker
• yarn needle
Special thank you to MargiBorck & Wolflovertoo for doing a great job test knitting and offering suggestions for this pattern!
Make this hat a set by knitting the “Wine in the Wool” hat, too! Instructions for both the cowl & hat are included in the pdf that can be purchased through the “Buy it now” link on this page. Or, Wine in the Wool can be purchased through the “Color Packs & Stash Scraps” link to get it along with 11 other patterns that focus on using smaller quantities of multiple colors of yarn, making them perfect for pairing with mini skein color bundles, or using as stash busters!
