There’s nothing quite like sailing downwind on a sunny summer afternoon. The wind fills the sails and the boat slides effortlessly through the water. If you’re lucky, the conditions might be right for sailing “wing and wing”. Wing and Wing refers to setting the sails with the main sail pointed out to one side and the jib out on the other, giving the impression that the boat is spreading its wings and flying over water.

This shawl’s shape resembles the spreading of a ship’s sails like wings out to either side of the mast. The eyelet rows mimic the ripples as the hull slips through the waves. The pattern is easy to memorize and relaxing to knit.
