“A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.” - Maya Angelou

Join me in this mystery knit that was designed to be completely for the birds… in the best way possible! Our feathered friends can be found in nearly every corner of the world. Each one posesses unique strengths, characteristics, and abilities, just like every one of us. This opulent wrap was designed to let your colors sing and take flight, just like the birds that inspired them.

What to expect:
While there are a lot of surprises hidden within this design, here are some things that you can expect:

  • unique construction
  • lace
  • bias knitting
  • easy cables
  • slipped stitches
  • color changes All techniques with charts will also include written instructions. I’ve created tutorial videos to guide you through any new techniques. There will NOT be any stranded colorwork or brioche. This design is intended for intermediate knitters, but my patterns and tutorials are designed to guide adventurous beginner skills to the next level. The best part of a KAL… there will be lots of helpful knitters to take you under their wing!

Finished dimensions:
It’s a mystery!

Birdwatching Supplies:
Needles:
Two sets of US 5 (3.75 mm) needles (or as required to meet gauge); 40” / 100 cm or similar length recommended
NOTE: In place of a second set of gauge needles, you can use needles of a smaller gauge, an extra cable, or scrap yarn). I recommend choosing gauge needles based on the Swatching Guide and/or the needles used on my previous MKAL wraps.

Gauge:
BLOCKED: 20 sts and 40 rows = 4”/10cm in garter stitch after wet-blocking and pinning
UNBLOCKED: 24 sts and 48 rows = 4”/10cm in garter stitch before blocking
(NOTE: Gauge is not crucial, but it will affect finished dimensions and yardage)

Notions:
Required: 2 stitch markers, cable needle, and tapestry needle
Optional: 72 stitch markers (for repeats), blocking wires, pins, and mats

Yarn Requirements:
MC: 800 yds / 732 m fingering weight yarn
C1-7: 133 yds / 122 m fingering weight yarn in EACH of 7 colors

The sample for this design uses Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply in ‘Wings of Wonder’ kit, though other dyers have created kits to give you LOTS of options (see the full list here). This project also works great with stash and leftover yarns! Included in your Getting Ready Guide is a section on ‘Curating Your Own Kit’ with suggestions for compiling your own palette.
