Wingsweep is a simple asymmetrical, elongated triangle knit shawl with a gently increasing pattern of eyelets and subtle short-row scallops. It can be knit with any weight yarn - simply change your needle size to match whatever yarn you have, leaning toward a looser gauge for nice drape. I’ve suggested sizes below for achieving lovely drape with different weights of yarn. The pattern is written for a light-ish fingering somewhere in the 450yd/100g range and while one hank will make a sweet shawlette/triangular scarf, between 1 and 2 will make a lovely shoulder shawl. Alternately, you may choose to use heavy lace (somewhere in the 600yd/100g range) and will have a fine-gauged medium sized shawl. Whatever weight you choose, you can continue to grow the pattern until you run out of yarn or it grows large enough for your liking.

Details include eyelets, subtle short rows and a picot finish, all of which are optional and can be adjusted or eliminated. In blocking you can decide whether to accentuate the short row scalloping or pull the edge taut for a bit more flare.

Needles: 4.5mm / US7 32” or 40” fixed circulars (or straight needles if you prefer), for knitting back and forth

Yarn: Approximately 700yds fingering weight yarn. Large pink sample shown is Crooked Kitchen Yarn Mericash Lux 70/20/10 Fingering in the “Sophrosyne” colourway 437yds / 100g.
Small purple sample shown is Crooked Kitchen Yarn Merylon 75/25 Fingering in an OOAK colourway, 463yds / 100g. 463 yds used. The eyelets are subtle in this pattern and will be harder to see in a variegated yarn.

Needle Suggestions: Heavy lace = 4mm/US6, Fingering = 4.5mm/US7, Sport = 5mm/US8, DK = 5.5mm/US9

Gauge: 4” garter = 19 sts x 38 rows (or 5 sts per inch), gently blocked NOTE THAT GAUGE IS NOT CRITICAL but will affect yardage and dimensions

Dimensions: This is a loosely knit garter shawl so you can block very aggressively or not at all. The large pink sample, knit per the pattern was very gently blocked. It measures approx 7’ 7” at wingspan and it’s about 16” deep. The small shawl was a little more aggressively blocked and has a 7’ 3” wingspan and is about 13” deep.
