Just like the song says, “We go together…like a Wink and a Smile.” And, like the song, this shawl is designed to be knitted with 2 different yarns that just go together - one strand of fingering and one strand of a fluffy lace weight yarn held together. Maybe they will both be the same color, or 2 different colors that just go together. Or perhaps you will go a different direction altogether and find a DK or a worsted weight yarn that is soft and inviting and just knit it alone.

This crescent-shaped shawl begins with a gently curving upper edge and a stockinette stitch design that goes together with eyelet rows at the edge and a lovely picot bind-off. It can be worn as either a cozy wrap, or draped lightly over your shoulders. And, it would make the perfect gift for yourself or for someone that you go together with like a …”Wink and a Smile” ;-)

MATERIALS:

1 skein fingering weight yarn, approximately 400 yards AND 1-2- skeins fluffy lace weight yarn, approximately 320-400 yards, HELD TOGETHER

NOTE: You may use 400 yards of a single strand DK or worsted instead

The examples are knitted with:

La Bien Aimee - MERINO SUPER SOCK (75% Superwash Merino, 25% Nylon, approx. 467 yards) and KUMO (74% Suri Alpaca, 26% Mulberry Silk, approx. 328 yards) HELD TOGETHER - both in the Aimee’s Flashy Lipstick colorway (deep pinkish red)

Magpie Fibers - SWANKY SOCK (80% Superwash Merino, 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon, approx. 400 yards) in the Smoke on the Water colorway (grayish medium blue) and PLUME (75% Cashmere, 25% Silk, approx. 315 yards) in the Into the Mystic colorway (soft, light blue/lavender) HELD TOGETHER

Optional but highly recommended: yarn scale (a postage scale, etc. works too)

** YARN CHICKEN NOTE: While most fluffy lace weight yarn skeins are around 400 yards, a few are less, such as La Bien Aimee KUMO (328 yards) or Magpie Fibers PLUME (315 yards). So you can either purchase an additional skein OR join me in a playing that delightful game of yarn chicken. To help you, I give hints in the pattern on how to make it work ;-)

24” to 40” circular needles between a size 5 and 7
