The Winter Forest Cowl has it all--trees, branches, pine cones, snowflakes. And this is a choose your own adventure-in-the-forest cowl. You can knit any or all of the motifs, in any order you desire. You can make this shorter so it is snug around your neck, or make it long enough to double up for a really cold winter.

The sample is knit with Abundant Earth Fibers Josef and Anni, a wonderful rustic-spun yarn from a local fiber mill, and Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool. I used under two skeins of each for this version, which is 48 inches long before grafting, and can be doubled around the neck. Both yarns are deliciously soft against the skin.

The cowl starts with a provisional crochet cast on and is knit in the round, making a tube. Once you reach your desired length, you will twist the cowl and close the two ends with Kitchener stitch. Videos are provided for both the cast on and the Kitchener in the round to make this easy for everyone. I have also included a video for steam blocking. And I’ve included my handy Notes on Floats to help you with colorwork patterns.

This pattern is great worked in only two shades, or you can go wild with color. Use up scraps, change colors in each section, make this any way you want.

You will need approximately 700 yards of a solid color sport weight for the background, and slightly less than 400 yards of color for the motifs to make this longer version.
