Allow approx. 150m/ 165yds of Worsted weight yarn - it’s best if you use light to medium shades, rather than dark ones. The yarn should be plain or with only subtle shading (no stripes, no strong variegation)
You can substitute other yarn weights as long as you get 18st per 10cm/4” gauge (if not, your hat will end up larger or smaller)
