Winter Rising Shawl
For this design, I was inspired by the way the sun rises on a winter morning. I saw many of these sunrises last winter when my daughter was only a few weeks old. Having a newborn snuggling into my neck as I paced in circles around my lounge, I would often gaze out of our large window at the changing sky feeling like the only person awake in the world.
The inky blue would slowly morph into a washed out grey, almost a visual palate cleanser, before brilliant red would burst across the sky to let you know dawn was breaking. These red tendrils snaking across the sky would give me a small burst of hope that the day was beginning and that we had made it through another wakeful night.
Whenever I think of home, this window connects me to the beginning of my journey as a mother, and I can’t look at this window without thinking of the ever changing sky that used to signal the passing of time and the beginning of a new day.
The deep navy represents the dark night sky, while the bands of red and beige are the dawn colours that mottle the sky. The navy sections are stockinette stitch, the texture bands are framed by garter stich, and the bands themselves have slip stiches to give the effect.
