Welting is like ribbing that runs horizontally instead of vertically.
The purl stitches rise up and the knit stitches sink down giving the
finished fabric a corrugated appearance with the ridges and troughs running side to side instead of top to bottom. If you use a dark main color and a lighter contrast color, the light peeks through the dark just like the sun peeks through the darkness in the dead of winter, a promise of warmth and brightness to come.
