The Winter Wheat Afghan is an easy crochet project for confident beginners. Simple lines and striking stitches create an inviting texture in this large throw blanket. Made with worsted-weight wool in a classic design, it is sure to be a keepsake piece.

This blanket is made with twenty 12-inch square motifs worked in the round. At the center of each motif is a large circle made with 28 treble crochets worked into a ring. As the circle is transformed into a square, bands of puff V-stitches are worked on four sides.

The blanket is assembled with a simple whipstitch to join motifs into four strips. The strips are then sewn together and a wide border is added. The bands of puff V-stitches in the motifs continue into the border and add a refined finish.
