These laid-back socks keep all the chills from your
feet so you can relax and enjoy the cold weather.

Thicker wool socks are great for outdoor adventures, hard
work in freezing temperatures, all-day skiing, or skating
along the world’s longest outdoor skating rink.

In Canada, we don’t mess around with winter. What’s that
saying? -- There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad
clothes. Winter can be lovely when you’re properly dressed.
And wool is the magical natural fibre that keeps the damp
cold from settling into your bones because it stays warm
even when it gets wet. It breathes, is naturally antimicrobial,
flame resistant, biodegradable, and all-around cozy. So
stop buying those thick polyester/cotton socks that keep your toes woefully disappointed, and start knitting these quick-knit thick socks for everyone you know.

Yarn Ideas

Any DK-weight or light worsted yarn that’s strong enough for socks will work. Briggs & Little Heritage or Regal would work well. (Their Tuffy yarn is a little bit thicker, so you could use it, but you might have to adjust your stitch count using the sizing calculation provided.)

Construction Details

These socks are worked from the toe up, with garter
ribbing, a German-Short-Row heel, and ribbed cuffs.

They’re meant to be a basic, all-purpose sock pattern
to get you started with knitting socks.

The pattern is written in such a way that you can use
any type of needle configuration you prefer for knitting
socks. (I use the Magic Loop technique, myself.) All
you have to do is keep track of the beginning of your
round.

Sizes Available

The main pattern is written for adult socks using 48 sts.

There is a chart that gives stitch counts for every size from Newborn up through Men’s 15, and instruction for calculating your own stitch counts based on foot measurements.

Errata: To calculate the cast-on number for your toe-up socks, divide the midfoot stitch count by 3. Divide evenly onto your needles for knitting in the round.
