Winter’s Waves Scarf
This scarf is quick to knit up and is a great introduction to color work if you are just getting started. It’s also my first time recording a pattern, so please feel free to email me with questions at jkkowalski@icloud.com or you can find me on Ravelry as TheDoctorDonna.

Finished Size: 60” (152 cm) long; 6 1/2” (16.5 cm) wide after blocking

Yarn
Worsted Weight.

Yarns used in Picture:
MAIN COLOR (MC): Cascade Yarns “Eco +”, 478 yards 437 m; 250 g 8.75 ounces, Grape 3479, 1 skein (with plenty left over); CONTRAST COLOR (CC): Knitpicks.com “Wool of the Andes” 110 yards 106.6 m; 50 g 1.8 ounces, Fern, 2 skeins.

Needles
1 set of US 9 (5.5 mm) straight needles;
1 K (6.5 mm) crochet hook for edging/finishing.

Gauge
4.5 to 5 stitches per 1” on size US 9 (5.5 mm) needles. Gauge is moderately important but not crucial. Check to make sure you are in the ballpark by casting on 20 stitches and knitting 20 rows should yield 4” x 4” square.

Notions
Stitch marker (m) to make pattern repeat easier and a tapestry needle for weaving ends.

Stitch & Abbreviation Guide:
CC = contrast color
CO = cast on
k = knit
k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
MC = main color
p = purl
pm = place marker
RS = right side
sc = single crochet
ssk = slip, slip knit (slip 2 stitches knit-wise to right hand needle and knit together)
st (sts) = stitch (stitches)
yo = yarn over

SCARF
CO 13 sts, pm, CO 13 sts = total 26 stitches in MC

Row 1 (RS), 2, & 3: with MC knit across all sts;
Row 4: purl across all sts;
Row 5: change to CC {k4, {yo, k} 5x, yo, k4}* repeat 1x to end of row
Row 6: purl across all sts
Row 7: {k2tog 3x, k7, ss7 3x}* repeat 1x to end of row
Row 8: knit across all sts

Repeat rows 1 to 8 until piece measures 60” (152 cm) approx., carrying color strands up the sides to avoid long floats between colors.

How to carry a strand up the side within pattern: After adding CC in row 5, on row 7 catch strand of MC as you k2tog at beginning of row then repeat the catch with the color that is not being worked in rows 3 and 7 of pattern as you work. Finishing
Work single crochet along each long edge of scarf; weave in ends; block to size.
