Wise Owl Illusion
This illusion knit wall-hanging has been designed using an original drawing and an original ambigram both by Catherine-Joye Truman.
It was first created in 2012 as a critical reflective project while completing a Postgraduate University Paper. This paper was focused of the structural analysis of social problems. It had a particular emphasis on the professional use of self, the interplay of oppression and privilege and the development of reflexivity.
I have a close affinity to owls and see that the gaze of this owl is piercing, and to really develop an understanding of how we use ourselves, we must look at our selves, reflecting deeply. – hence the word at first – with careful looking – appears as Reflection.
This gives one another clue, as to look at our self, we need to stand back, to look in the mirror and see ourselves as others see us. Then the reflection gives us the word Revelation.
The wall-hanging also carries an interplay of polarities, with one colour standing back to let the other shine forth. Standing back (purling on the wrong side) involves as much action as standing out in a ridge. This mirrors the interplay of privilege and oppression.
Interpret this as it relates to you and enjoy!
