This pattern was originally designed for Super Sock World Championship 2024. It is now available to everyone!

Since childhood, it seems to me that owls in stories have always seemed like such wise little creatures, watching over their friends. I was inspired to write a design with these in mind and I hope seeing them perched at the top of your sweet socks will make you smile!

Yarn and notions:

Yarn: 100g fingering weight (350-425 yards / 320-390 metres)
Sample in Hug Me Cactus Fingering (80% Merino 20%) Nylon by Cactus Yarn Studio
Colourway: Noisette (and a 10-20 g mini in Alice)

Needles:

  • 2.25 mm needles with a long cable for magic loop (for cuff, leg and foot)
  • 2.5 mm needles with a long cable for magic loop (for Latvian braid and owl motif)
  • List item

Note:
* This pattern features Latvian braids and cables which tend to make the knitted fabric a little tighter. I went up a needle size to 2.5mm for that reason for knitting the Perched Owls section.

Other notions: cable needle, stitch markers, scissors, darning needle

Gauge: 8 sts = 1 inch / 2.5cm in stockinette with the smaller needles (2.25mm)

Note:
The instructions are written for 2 colours. You may of course decide to knit these socks in only one colour. Simply follow the instructions while omitting the colour changes, though you will then need a second strand of your main colour in order to do the Latvian braids if you wish to keep that design element.
