The Withy Hat is one of six patterns in issue three of John Arbon Textiles’ in house magazine, The Annual.

Knitted in autumnal shades from the Yarnadelic or Harvest Hues Worsted ranges, this hat makes a warm and cosy knit that’s perfect for keeping out the wind on a chilly winter’s day on the moors. The twisted stitch cable reminds us of basket work, so we called this pattern ‘Withy’ which is an old word for Willow.

Beginning with a tubular cast on, this hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The single rib brim can either be worked to a short or doubled length and texture is added to the body of the hat using twisted stitches.

Gauge
22 sts x 28 rnds = 10cm / 4” over Chart A pattern using larger needles, after blocking.
28 sts x 30 rnds = 10cm / 4” over 1x1 twisted rib using smaller needles, after blocking.

Needles
Knitting needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round:
3.75mm (UK9 / US5) for main fabric
3.5mm (US4) for ribbing

Always use a needle size that results in the correct gauge after blocking.

Pattern Notes
Beginning with a tubular cast-on, this hat is worked in the round, from the bottom up. The ribbed brim can be worked either short, or longer and then folded. After the brim, texture is added using twisted stitches.

Withy is designed as a slouchy hat; work fewer repeats of Chart A if you want a more fitted beanie.
