‘Wolds wind ‘neath my feet

Silver, grey, yellow in May

Sky that wanders on’.

  • Luke Smith, ‘Wolds Haiku’.

Inspired by the huge expanses of Lincolnshire fields that are left idle over the winter with the remnants from the Summer Harvest. Later the land is reclaimed by golden grasses and illuminated by the low winter sunlight.

The colour palette for this knit is golden browns and yellows, bronze and clay. Though this can be changed to suit your inspiration.

Pattern: An asymmetric, garter stitch shawl with distinct colour banding and a simple lace pattern creating textured bands. An eyelet lace edging on one finished edge adds pretty detailing and an unique twist to this shawl.

Sizing: 70” at longest edge and 21” at centre width (blocked measurements).

Yarn: This sample is knitted in a combination of fingering and lace weights (lace weights held double together) to provide an interesting mix of colours and textures.

The focus of the pattern, is to allow others to interpret and play with yarn colour, gradients and weights. Thus, any of the yarns used in this sample can be substituted with any 4ply variations that suit your preference. Similarly, this shawl can be knitted in other weight yarns, though you may wish to adjust your needle sizing accordingly.

A stash-busting pattern: the more oddments you can add, the more unique and artistic your final shawl will be. This is all about harnessing your creativity (whilst finally using up that odd skein of yarn you just don’t know what to do with!)

Skill Level: this is perfect for the novice knitting looking for a simple introduction to shawl and lace patterns. It’s also great for more experienced knitters, to modify and create a unique piece that experiments with colour and texture.
