The Wolkenburg is another one of the seven hills of the Siebengebirge, Germany. Being covered by clouds a lot of the time the name Wolkenburg would be translated to “castle in the clouds”.

Trying to protect his territory against the Counts of Sayn - which lived on the nearby Loewenburg - the archbishop of cologne build a castle on top of the Wolkenburg hill in 1118.

Being of volcanic origin the Wolkenburg consist of Latite, a rock
that became very popular for buildings and even was used while
the construction of the cologne cathedral and several other
representative buildings. This usage of the Wolkenburg Latite led to the collapse of the Wolkenburg Castle in 1740 and also to the hill being about 30m smaller today.

The shawl was thus inspired by the Wolkenburg Latite in combination with the omnipresent clouds that cover the hill most of the time.

Three contrast colors build up garter sections while the grey main color is used to knit the lace sections of the shawl.
