The women’s freedom movement in Iran deserves our support— as women, knitters, and fellow human beings. Their fight must not be forgotten. Increased global attention has led to a reduction in many death sentences, and by continuing to watch and speak out, we can help sustain this momentum. If women aren’t free, then no one is truly free.

My idea was to create a versatile chart that could be incorporated into socks, knitting bags, or even sweaters. The checker pattern can be repeated as needed, with any stitch count above 40 that’s divisible by 8.

The checker pattern is inspired by traditional Nordic motifs (also seen worldwide) and symbolizes the battle between good and evil. The dove represents hope, and the heart, women’s symbol, and radiant sun can take on any meaning you choose. The sun’s wavy rays can even evoke a sense of flowing hair.

I encourage incorporating red, white, and green into the pattern, even if just in small accents or duplicate stitching. You can decide how boldly or subtly you wish to share this message of solidarity through your knitting.

Feel free to suggest what I can put this pattern on, a simple cowl perhaps? I do want to knit it up and share more details on how to use the pattern.
