While I was working on this pattern, it was nicknamed The Woodland Creatures Shawl because when I was knitting the smaller sample (the one in greens and pink). The colours I had chosen reminded me of lichen on old growth trees, and the pink noses of bunnies and woodland mice.

I was still wavering on the name when I realized that the Woodland Creatures in question were probably all the same creatures and friends in attendance at the Fox Wedding I spoke about in one of my previous shawl patterns. :)

I can’t seem to get past that imagery, it’s just so lovely. So the name stuck!

Woodland Creatures is a rustic lovely simple top-down lace shawl. Worked in 4 colours of Lichen and Lace Rustic Heather Sport. The pattern contains both written and charted instructions and you can repeat either to make the shawl as large as you’d like.

The smaller sample (dark green, light green, grey and pink):

Colour 1: one skein of “Shrub”
Colour 2: one skein of “Birch”
Colour 3 one skein of “Sage”
Colour 4: one skein of “Rose”

The larger sample (dark grey, light grey, lighter grey and pink):

Colour 1: two skeins of “Coal”
Colour 2: one skein of “Rose”
Colour 3 one skein of “Ash”
Colour 4: one skein of “Smoke”

Needles:

For the smaller sample: 4mm (US6) circular needles in at least a 24” (60cm) cord. Or whatever size needles it takes you to get gauge.

For the larger sample: 3.75mm (US6) circular needles in at least a 24” (60cm) cord. Or whatever size needles it takes you to get gauge.

Notions:

4 stitch markers.
Whichever tools you prefer to weave in ends.
Whichever tools you prefer to block your shawls.

Gauge:

Note: The smaller sample has a larger gauge and the larger sample has a smaller gauge.

The smaller sample:

18 stitches and 20 rows = 4” (10cm) square knit flat in pattern and blocked.

The larger sample:

20 stitches and 21 rows = 4” (10cm) square knit flat in pattern and blocked.

Size:

The smaller sample:

52” (132cm) measured along the wingspan.
25” (64cm) measured down the deepest part of the triangle.

The larger sample:

66” (168cm) measured along the wingspan.
33” (84cm) measured down the deepest part of the triangle.
