Woodlot Cowl
The Woodlot Cowl is a light-weight, densely cabled cowl knit in fingering weight yarn. The pattern includes instructions for two widths and two heights, and is meant to fit somewhat loosely around the neck.
If your ideal cowl size is somewhere in between, don’t worry! The pattern also includes instructions on how to modify the size according to your preferences.
Pattern includes written instructions, charted instructions, and two low vision versions (see file information below for details).
Sizes
Approximate Height: 7.75 (11) inches / 20 (28) centimeters
Approximate Width: 11 (13.25) inches / 28 (34) centimeters
Yarn
Small width, short height: 365 yards (334 meters)
Small width, tall height: 470 yards (430 meters)
Large width, short height: 410 yards (375 meters)
Large width, tall height: 545 yards (500 meters)
Note: The yarn totals above include a 10% buffer to allow for differences in knitting style and yarn composition and for your swatch.
The actual amount of yarn used for the pattern sample (small width and tall height) was a total of 430 yards (394 meters) of Knitcraft and Knittery Fingering Weight Corriedale (100% Corriedale) in colorway Naked Shade #05.
Unfortunately, the dyer whose yarn I used is no longer selling yarn. For yarn substitutions, choose a light fingering weight yarn that is plied, springy, and has good stitch definition. A solid, semi-solid, or tonal colorway is recommended in order to allow the cable pattern to stand out. The yarn used in the sample is non-superwash.
Needles
US 3 (3.25mm) circular needles with 20″/51cm long cord
Or, size needed to obtain gauge
Note: I tend to knit rather tightly. Several testers used a smaller size needle for their cowls. If you know you knit loosely, you may want to have a smaller needle on hand in case you need to go down a size or two.
Gauge
42 stitches and 32 rounds = 4 inches / 10 centimeters in Main Pattern Repeat (Knit swatch in the round)
Notions
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
1 stitch marker
1 cable needle
Note: Instructions include marker for beginning of round only. If you prefer to have markers between each repeat, you will need 10 (12) stitch markers.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Skills needed include knitting in the round, knit, purl, ssk, k2tog, p2tog, m1, C4B, C4F, 2/2RPC, 2/2LPC, and two special cable decreases (2/1RPCDecrease, 2/1LPCDecrease) that are both described in the abbreviations
