Like most small children, my daughter has a tendency to collect little treasures during our walks. Even in the winter, when there are no dandelions to pick or inchworms to scoop up, she manages to find plenty to fill her pockets – birds’ feathers, leaves with interesting shapes, and small pebbles that somehow stand out from the rest.
I wanted to knit her a coat especially for our winter walks – one that would combine my love for vintage details with her need for a warm sweater.

The result is the Woodsprite Hooded Coat. With pockets to hold pine cones and stones and a pixie hood to keep away the chill, it’s just the thing to wear while searching for treasures in the forest. Cozy worsted weight yarn knits up quickly, and knitterly details like icord edging and a back pleat keep things interesting.

Knit entirely from the top down, the coat starts with a hood that’s knit flat and grafted together later. The classic raglan shape flows into an a-line body, and the sweater is edged with icord to give it a finished look. An optional garter stitch tab positioned just above the back pleat give the coat a polished look.

The 3 and 6 month sizes include instructions for making false pockets, and the pocket instructions for the larger sizes are fully illustrated with photos. The pattern also includes a step-by-step photo tutorial for finishing the pleat.
