Woolly Heads
Knit an effigy of your husband, girlfriend, mother, best friend, brother and everyone else you know with this customisable, mix-and-match pattern.
There are 6 different hairstyles and 2 beards which are knit separately then sewn on, 3 hairstyles (including bald) and 1 beard which are knit using intarsia, as well as 2 buns, a hat, a moustache and glasses to choose from.
The cornrows in the photo are easily adapted to make them longer, shorter or to leave them loose as dreadlocks.
The hair can also be embroidered on or attached with a crochet hook to give even more variety.
The heads are knit flat and if using Cascade 220 yarn and 4mm needles are approximately 8cm (3 inches) tall without any hair added on top. If you use a different yarn and/or needles the size may differ.
You will need:
- Cascade 220 yarn in a skin colour, a hair colour and a little in appropriate colours for the eyes and mouth. One or two colours for the hat, if making.
- 4mm (US 6) knitting needles.
- A tapestry needle.
- Toy stuffing.
- White embroidery thread and a sharp sewing needle.
- If knitting the hair separately, a few pins.
- If attaching the hair with cow hitch, a 4mm crochet hook.
- For dreadlocks, cornrows and braids: 4mm (US 6) double-pointed needles.
- Optional: a bobble for the hat.
- Optional: blusher.
Techniques you should be familiar with before using this pattern:
- Increases and decreases.
- Some heads require intarsia, most do not.
- For dreadlocks, cornrows and braids: i-cord.
- Sewing seams using mattress stitch. (When you buy this pattern you will also receive a free instant download PDF of my Mattress Stitch for Knitted Toys Tutorial).
