Word Play
Build your own building blocks with these fun overlay mosaic crochet squares! Work every letter and assemble them in order (i.e., A-F, G-L…) to have a set of play blocks with the complete alphabet and a few symbols, or choose any six squares to spell something special like a child’s name or a sweet sentiment like I-L-O-V-E-U. If you’re feeling naughty, you can spell something bad… like B-O-O-G-E-R.
Each row only needs a small amount of yarn, so this can be a fantastic stash buster!
Finished Size
Each block: 2-3/4” / 7 cm cubed
Yarn
Knit Picks, Dishie, worsted (100% cotton, 190 yds/174 m; 3.5 oz/100 g):
A: 1 skein azure (light blue)
B: 1 skein mulberry (purple)
C: 1 skein fiesta red
Stash-busting tips: For each block, you will need about 1.75 oz/50 g of colors A and B. Color B uses a little more yarn than color A. You will need about 0.2 oz/6 g of color C for joining.
To make the 5 blocks needed for one complete alphabet set, you will need to switch color A, B, and C for the different blocks.
This pattern features a schematic with photos detailing the special overlay mosaic crochet stitches used to make the letters, as well as a layout diagram for deciding how to join your squares.
