Although I loved my vision of a folded colorwork brim on this hat, the most important element as I was designing was the crown decreases.
Unfortunately, the hat chose not to cooperate. I knit the headband portion, and it looked great. Started the body with its broken rib detail- looking good. Then I came to the crown decreases. I tried one method- ugly. Tried a different rate of decrease- even uglier!
I then did what any good designer does. I sat that naughty hat in a corner for 2 weeks so it could think about what it had done.
At the end of the time out period, I ripped it all out for the third time, recalculated the decreases, and this time it worked. The crown has turned out every bit as nice as I imagined.
I did learn a lot while designing this hat and decided, in the end, that the ripping out and redoing was Worth It.

Sizing notes:

I wanted this hat to have a snug beanie fit, but I recognize that this style does not suit everybody. A simple modification to when you start the decreases will allow for a slouchier fit. More MC yarn will be needed if modifications are made.

Crochet provisional cast on
Knit 2 together decreases
Stranded knitting
Folded brim with purl turning round

Materials Needed:
Yarn:
DK weight superwash yarn, 155 (180, 201) yards / 142 (165, 184) m of MC and 25 (25, 30) yards / 23 (23, 27) m of CC.
Sample knit with Wollmeise Merino DK (MC) and Skeincocaine Royal DK (CC)
Needles:
Size 4 US/ 3.5 mm and size 6 US/ 4.25 mm 16” (41 cm) circular needles or size needed to achieve gauge and your choice of size 6 US/ 4.25 mm DPNs or longer circular needle for small circumference knitting
Notions:
Smooth waste yarn
Stitch marker to mark beginning of round
Crochet hook about the same size as your knitting needle
Tapestry needle

Measurements:
Gauge: 21 sts in stranded pattern on larger needles equals 4”/ 10 cm after light blocking.
Finished dimensions:
Circumference at brim (outer layer measurement): 19.5 (21, 22.5)” / 50 (53, 57) cm
Total height cuff to crown: 7.5 (8, 8.5)” / 19 (20, 22) cm
