A simple and adaptable pattern which uses up odds and ends to make a colourful beanie. The brim is rolled stocking stitch, then the main hat is garter stitch, worked flat and joined with a seam. Great for stashbusting and for beginners.

The colourwork is inspired by the narrow contrasting bands seen on the wrong side of garter stitch stripes. I encourage you to experiment with different ways of blending your colours, high contrast or gradual spectrum, and with different widths of stripe.

You can get away with a certain amount of variation in yarn weight. Broadly, you want mostly worsted or DK weight, but a little bit of aran should work fine, as should a finer yarn like sock held double.
