Wrong 'Un Beanie
Make sure you’re following @beanieboat on Facebook and/or Instagram as that’s where I always announce the code for new release freebies. Happy Knitting. x
When it’s wrong, it’s right.
The Wrong ‘Un Beanie should never have made it off the notebook … but here we are.
I often feel the reverse side of stocking stitch gets forgotten about. I mean it’s the wrong side after all, right? Not anymore.
However, who wants to work row after row of purl stitch? Not me, so let’s work this inside out. Then when we get to the end of the brim and work a sneaky little double stitch (German Short Row) we’ll have a reversible beanie.
You will work in the round starting with the brim and with your two yarns held double. The brim is formed with a ‘broken rib’ stitch before moving onto the body which will work up quickly using stocking stitch. The crown is then formed using simple shaping and finally with careful weaving in of ends you can wear your beanie with either side as the right side.
Written in full with handy progress check boxes, so you can keep a visual track of where you are.
I have formatted this pattern in such a way that you should only need to print page 3 for size 1 or page 4 for size 2.
Saving the planet one unprinted page at a time.
Skills Used …
- Long tail cast on.
- Knit and purl stitches.
- Decreasing (SSK).
- Double stitch creation (only one of these and a video link is provided for help).
You will need the following …
- 4ply/sock : 2 x 40g of two colours that just shouldn’t work together. The more ‘wrong’ the better.
- 4.5mm & 5mm* (US 7 & 8) 16 inch (40 cm) circulars.
- 5mm* (US 6) dpns for the crown.
- BOR marker.
- Tapestry needle (for closing the crown and sewing those dreaded ends in).
(Or size required to obtain gauge).
Gauge and Size
19 stitches and 28 rows = 10cm (4 inch) using 5mm needles and >stocking stitch.
Finished dimensions will vary depending on ‘loftiness’ of your wool (not all are equal!).
Size 1 : approximately 7.5 inches wide by 8.5 inches tall (unblocked, laid flat).
Size 2 : approximately 8.5 inches wide by 9.5 inches tall (unblocked, laid flat).
I can’t wait to see your beanie so please do be sure to start a project page or tag me on Instagram and Facebook (#mmmbeanie @beanieboat).
Follow me (@beanieboat) on Instagram and Facebook for updates on future patterns, test-knits and giveaways from my little floating shop. Yes, I said floating … it’s on a narrowboat where I live and work.
If you like the look of this pattern it would be a huge help to me if you would give it a like as I have an overflowing notebook of ideas and this helps me understand what to work on next. Your support of my little dream is so appreciated. Every ‘like’ helps and it’s a known fact I do a tiny happy dance each time I get a notification. I am a terrible dancer!
